Cross Island
Cross Island
island, 300 yards long, Delarof Harbor, on SE coast of Unga I. in Shumagin Is. Local name reported and published by USGS in the 1950's.

This is looking toward the West, into Delarof Bay, it is blowing a stiff Northwest breeze. This Island was a fortress for the Aleut people who inhabited Ounga. Some say the kodiak and Unga aleuts had a squirmish here. the Unga Aleuts dropped boulders and hot water on the Kodiak aleuts as they tried to assend the steep sided Cross Island. "Uglamia" I think is the Aleut word referring to the Cliffs for the outer harbor of Unga. And I heard the aleut word "Ugladen" I guess then will refer to the inner harbor. 2003
